Upcoming Resident Evil 2 Will Be A Full Remake Rather Than An HD Remaster

When Capcom declared it was remaking Resident Evil 2 earlier this year, it was quite difficult to verify if it was going to be an upressed remaster like Resident Evil HD and the upcoming Resident Evil Zero HD, or in fact a total remake from the ground up.

As it turns out, rather excitingly, it’s the latter. "Seems to be a few people picking up a mistranslation in our own investor report," Capcom’s Stuart Turner tweeted this morning. "RE2 will be a full from the ground up remake NOT a remaster." Clearly sales of Resi Evil HD must have been impressive to justify the costs of this, because it’s going to be a far bigger undertaking than either of the HD remasters. The reason it’s going to be trickier is because RE HD was remade for GameCube already, while RE0 was a new game using the same engine. Capcom didn’t have to work with the PSone originals, making it a much simpler process. Resident Evil 2 Remake will have to be remade entirely from the ground up, with new textures, models, geometry; everything.

At the moment we know next to nothing, about than that it will be produced by Yoshiaki Hirabyashi, who worked on the original Resident Evil 2 as a programmer.

"You've been telling us for years that you want Resident Evil 2 to be remade, and we haven't been able to make it happen...until now!" Hirabayashi said during Capcom’s announcement earlier this year. "We at R&D Division 1 will do our best to take on your feedback and deliver the gameplay experience you've been waiting for."
If Capcom can keep up with the yearly release schedule then we may see it in January 2017, hopefully. In the meantime, Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster is hitting PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on January 19th, 2016.
