We might be living in the age of Skylake, but Intel’s brief foray into Broadwell isn’t dead just yet. Specs have leaked out for a new eXtreme overclocking Broadwell-E processor packing a massive 10 physical CPU cores supported by 20 threads.
The Intel Core i7-6950X is one of four new Intel Core i7 Broadwell-E processors using socket LGA2011 v3 set to launch imminently. The flagship model will be one of the fastest processors in Intel’s current line-up, with the Intel Core i7-6950X featuring 10 cores clocked at 3.0GHz. The CPUs will all support overclocking via an unlocked multiplier, while the i7-6950X will offer extreme overclocking thanks to voltage control.
These specs aren’t confirmed by Intel just yet, but they seem like the real deal. That ten-core CPU is the most interesting of the bunch, adding an additional two cores above and beyond that seen in Haswell-E. This comes at the price of clock speed, which has been set at 3.0GHz. This doesn’t make it the greatest choice for gamers, unless you’re playing one of the few games with great multi-threaded performance. Couple this with some decent overclocking however and we could be talking serious performance.
