This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody, but it’s looking as if multiplayer shooter Star Wars Battlefront will almost certainly be getting sequels in the near future. To the dismay of databases across the world, the next one will probably confuse us all and be called Star Wars Battlefront II - consigning Pandemic's 2005 game to the scrap heap.
The news comes from EA CFO Blake Jorgensen, who was chatting about the plans the publisher has with the Star Wars IP. EA snapped up the rights to produce Star Wars games from Disney a few years back as part of a ten-year deal, and it understandably wants to milk it for all its worth while the coming five years are littered with six, count 'em six, Star Wars movies.
"It's a big effort for us, and I don't think there's a human being in the world who hasn't heard of the Star Wars movie coming," said Jorgenson. "We struck a licensing deal with Disney. Our goal is to make future Battlefront games as well as other style games around the Star Wars franchise, both on mobile as well as console and PC. It's a huge opportunity for us."
So there you have it, expect more than one Star Wars Battlefront game to arrive and capitalise on the inevitable box office smash movies. This year’s game focuses on the events in Episode IV: A New Hope through to Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, as well as the Battle of Jakku DLC bridging the gap to Episode VII. Jorgensen talks about having the ability to create games based on the entire history of Star Wars movies, so don’t be surprised to see a Star Wars Battlefront based on the prequel trilogy *shudder*, as well as the upcoming new trilogy.
Star Wars Battlefront is out today in the US and on Thursday in Europe, for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
