Obsidian Has Revived Cancelled Xbox One Launch RPG And Will Announce Soon
Pillars of Eternity and Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment has another RPG in the works, and it’s ready to reveal it very soon. Originally conceived as an Xbox One exclusive launch title, Microsoft cancelled the game as it didn’t believe it could be a system seller.
The reason being it “didn’t feel like a first-party title”, so Microsoft couldn’t see where it would fit into its line-up. Which is odd, because it managed to squeeze in LocoCycle, Powerstar Golf and Crimson Dragon for the Xbox One’s launch and they were uniformly awful. Regardless, Obsidian’s RPG is back with another publisher, and they’re going to be ready to show it in “the next few months.” Obsidian CEO, Feargus Urquhart talked about the RPG during a recent Game Informer podcast, admitting its cancellation a few years back was one of the lowest points in the studio’s history, with around 40 staff having to be laid off. Microsoft wanted it to make use of the Xbox One’s unique features such as Kinect, but ultimately it didn’t work out.
A few years down the line and it’s good news for the rest of us though, because Obsidian is reviving the unnamed RPG and presumably preparing to launch it on a range of platforms. Splitting from Microsoft has allowed them to change the vision of the game slightly and adapt it to a different audience. There’s no clues for Urquhart on what the game even is, but it seems the beloved RPG studio is preparing to reveal the game in early 2016.
