Torment: Tides Of Nemenera Prepares For A Crisis In New Trailer

Despite widespread critical acclaim, Black Isle’s Planescape: Torment wasn’t exactly the money spinner Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale were. It’s not all that difficult to see why - a protagonist dubbed The Nameless One traveling celestial plans to remember his lost lives doesn’t exactly scream success - but it is curious to see inXile Entertainment target this niche market with spiritual successor Torment: Tides of Numenera.

Still, Torment’s looking like a must-buy for ardent cRPG fans. In the new gameplay video inXile's lead designer Jeremy Kopman details the new Crisis elements. This is a system which throws up unexpected elements in the middle of fights, such as enemies surrendering or leaders fleeing the scene, all under the threat of time limits. From a tactical point of view it looks like this opens up a whole load of other scenarios, and it should also help fights feel more dynamic. The only probably we can see here is the unpredictability could throw some annoying game over screens, but it is going to mean every decision counts in Torment: Tides of Numenera.
