Arma 3 has shifted more than two million copies since its launch in 2013, but the fun hasn’t ended yet for Bohemia Interactive’s war simulator. The higher than expected sales for the hard as nails sim has seen Bohemia extend its release roadmap, with plenty of new features coming in 2016 and hopefully beyond.
These changes come in the form of the Nexus, Eden and Apex updates, which provide across the board upgrades for improved core features, increased visual fidelity and additional content to play through. The first of these, Nexus, is tackling gameplay refinements. Billed as a stepping stone update, Nexus fixes everything from AI to performance bottlenecks, along with improved audio and animations. AI in particular is in need of a bit of a do over. Arma 3’s foes are either frustratingly good or brain dead and waiting for you to fill them with bullets. A sensible middle ground with emergent tactics would be fantastic to see. Then, just when you thought your graphics card had taken enough of a pounding, the Eden update for Arma 3 is right around the corner. This is improving visual fidelity and usability, although Bohemia wouldn’t be drawn on specific details other than new lighting and water shaders.
The final part of the roadmap, for now at least, is Apex. This is what the other two patches are leading towards and it’s full blown paid-for expansion pack. This will take place on an entirely new jungle-strewn archipelago called Tanoa, located somewhere in the South Pacific ocean. It’s a co-op campaign with new vehicles, weapons, and characters, even introducing entirely new vehicle classes.
Nexus is due in November, Eden is scheduled for Q1 2016 and Arma 3 Apex is targeting a Q2 2016 launch.
