Over the past few months there’s been a surge of negativity surrounding Star Citizen. Questions are being asked, and rightly so, about just whether Roberts Space Industries’ title is ever going to arrive, or indeed if it can live up to its ambitious premise. Just when things seemed to be coming to a head, CIG go and host the annual CitizenCon and go and blow everyone away again.
The bulk of what was shown was a look at Squadron 42 - Star Citizen’s single-player component. This one’s long overdue. Erin Roberts, last year, said he expected Squadron 42 to be out in the first half of 2015. Anyway, they’ve clearly been busy since then as they’ve got some absolutely A-list talent on board, including Gillian Anderson, Luke Skywalker himself Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis, Mark Strong and John Ryse Davies. It’s easy to see how that $92 million doesn’t really stretch all that far now, with the lengthy development process we can already see Star Citizen got left behind a little graphically, but we’re hopeful this is more than made up for in terms of scale. Ahead of the persistent universe module launching, RSI also revealed the new Star Map system. This is a tool used to navigate Star Citizen’s vast universe, which seems to stretch away from our own Sol solar system and stretches out to Centauri and possibly beyond. I love what I’m seeing with Star Citizen every time it gets rolled out. It’s a scarily ambitious project but my worry is it’s too ambitious. If CIG can pull it off though, sci-fi fans could be in for an absolute treat. Originally scheduled to launch this year, Star Citizen will reportedly be arriving as a complete package in 2016. At the moment it’s being launched module by module, with the Hangar, Arena Commander and Planetside modules all complete to varying degrees, with the Squadron 42, First-Person Shooter and Persistent Universe modules still in development.
Have you picked up Star Citizen yet? Are you waiting until its feature complete until you jump in? Or does it not even appeal to you at all? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!
