Authorities have released security camera footage of a recent GameStop robbery in which a 7-year-old boy can be seen fighting against the thieves. The robbery took place in Montgomery County, Maryland on Friday, May 20, just before the store closed at 9 PM. According to the police press release (via Polygon), two men armed with handguns entered the store and ordered three shoppers, including the boy, to stand against the wall.
As you can see in the footage, the boy punches one of the suspects multiple times before he was dragged off. According to local news site WJLA, the boy went to GameStop with his family to buy a plush toy as a gift for a friend's birthday. It appears the plush toy is what he struck one of the thieves with.
"He's a brave little boy, and he recognized he was in a dangerous situation," his father said.According to the police report, the robbers stole an "undisclosed amount of cash" and personal property before fleeing the scene from the front door. The robbers reportedly pointed their weapons at the boy's parents' heads after demanding they get on the floor.
"As always, our top priority is the safety and protection of our customers," GameStop spokesperson Jackie Smith told WJLA. "We are working closely with local law-enforcement as they conduct an investigation. The boy's father said he's concerned this event could scar his son, and he hopes the robber get caught so his family can have closure.
"We don't want something like this to strike fear into him for a good portion of his life," he said. "The best thing we can say to our son in this instance is that the bad guys have been found, and they are in jail."
