Minecraft Selling 53,000 Copies Per Day
More than 106 million copies of Minecraft have been sold to date, Microsoft announced today. The exact number of copies sold by Microsoft's latest count is 106,859,714.
The company also released a number of other statistics that speak to Minecraft's massive and enduring appeal. Since the start of 2016, Minecraft has sold an average of over 53,000 copies per day, the company said, adding that there are more people playing Minecraft today than ever before. Each month, Minecraft sees more than 40 million unique players across all versions of the sandbox game.
Minecraft has been sold in every country and territory on the planet. Four copies of the game were sold to people in Antarctica, Microsoft said. In terms of demographics, the average player is 29 years old; 60 percent of players are male compared to 40 percent female.
Microsoft paid $2.5 billion to acquire the Minecraft franchise and developer Mojang in September 2014. Creator Markus "Notch" Persson exited Mojang as part of the buyout; he went on to outbid Jay-Z and Beyonce for a $70 million Beverly Hills home.
