Got Money To BURN ? One Life Is A New FPS Where A Single Death Locks You Out Permanently

How does a first-person shooter where you only ever have a single life take your fancy? Where you can hand over $10 and lose it in 10 seconds? Because that’s the premise behind One Life, a new multiplayer title which has just cropped up on Steam Greenlight.

Set within post-apocalyptic battlegrounds, in One Life you have literally that - one life. Once you’re killed off your fate is decided by your killer, who can choose whether to spare you or lock you out of the game forever. It’s part of what of what One Life’s developer has dubbed its ‘Domination’ feature. Players can forgive, humiliate, kill or steal from their fallen foes - the choice is up to them. Live chat even allows players to beg for forgiveness or scream in rage. It’s proper permadeath, where one bullet means you can never play again. One Life will be greyed out in your Steam library, and that’s your $10 up in smoke. From the looks of it One Life is a bit of a survival game so you’ll have scavenge for supplies, unite with buddies to form gangs, and craft everything you’ll need to survive.

It all sounds pretty brutal and unforgiving, and there’s every chance you could drop into its world and die almost instantly, without even getting a chance to give OneLife a good go. The devs don’t think this will be the case, saying “You can definitely survive for a long time in the game. That’s not a problem at all if you are a careful player. With smart tactics you can play the game for months.” 
One Life is a neat concept but on first impressions it could well be fundamentally flawed. Locking gamers out of a game at the account level just for dying in it will surely have some major backlash. One thing’s for sure - Valve's going to need to keep shoving plenty of coal in the furnace to keep Steam’s refund system working overtime when One Life launches. And that’s not even to mention how the dev team can maintain a steady player base when their biggest fans, the ones who stumped up the cash first, are locked out.
