AMD CEO Claims 2016 Arctic Island GPUs Will Double Performance Per Watt Of Fiji

Efficiency has been the big talking point from Nvidia the past couple of years. It was trumpeted as the chief selling point of Maxwell and it lead to some incredible cards like the diminutive GTX 750 Ti. AMD took a different approach, focusing on raw power, but that’s all about to change with its next-generation Arctic Island GPUs, headlined by Greenland in 2016.

During an earnings call, AMD CEO Lisa Su talking about the upcoming graphics card family, saying that the next generation of GPUs will offer double the performance per watt in comparison to the Fiji GPUs used in its current range. Right now with both AMD’s Greenland GPUs and Nvidia with Pascal, it feels like we’re teetering on the edge of a serious jump in performance.

“We are also focused on delivering our next generation GPUs in 2016 which is going to improve performance per watt by two times compared to our current offerings, based on design and architectural enhancements as well as advanced FinFET products process technology,” said Su.

At the moment it’s still not clear what fabrication process AMD is targeting. Nvidia is working with the 16nm FinFET node will AMD is going to be either 16nm or 14nm FinFET. Whatever the case, it’s going to be a huge leap from the comparatively clunky 28nm process used by the pair of them right it. It allows for a doubling of transistor density coupled with AMD’s performance per watt improvements, which theoretically means the upcoming graphics cards should be in the range of double the performance of the current line-up. It’s always the case in PC gaming that there’s something better just around the corner, but in Arctic Islands / Greenland and Pascal we’ve got some of the most genuinely exciting GPU advancements in years.
