Getting ready for VR next year is going to be an expensive business, but there is a silver lining to that great big stormy raincloud. When Oculus VR said earlier this year that the GeForce GTX 970 was the recommended spec for Oculus Rift they weren’t lying. In fact, Nvidia’s graphics card will be sufficient to run every single game and app on the Oculus Store. Doesn’t sound like a bad deal.
An Oculus VR representative took to the Oculus Rift Reddit to answer a fan question on whether they should settle for a GTX 970 or aim higher, to which the Oculus VR response was “A consumer owning a 970 will be able to play everything on our store.” That falls in line with what we were expecting but it’s good to know that’s all we’ll need. In the short term at least.
At the moment it looks like the PC itself will cost in the region of $900-$1000, comprising a GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290, along with 8 gigs of system memory and an Intel Core i5-4690 processor or equivalent. If you’re packing that, on the basis of this you’re good to go.
Oculus Rift Recommended System Requirements
- OS: Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 Or Newer
- CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3 GHz or AMD FX-8350 4.0 GHz
- RAM: 8 GB System Memory
- GPU RAM: 4GB Video Memory or greater
- GPU: GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290
- Inputs: 2x USB 3.0 Ports
- Output: Compatible HDMI 1.3 Video Output
All of this ties into the Oculus Ready PCs which have been doing the rounds. Oculus VR has been partnering up with all sorts of custom PC builders to make rigs designed specifically towards the Rift and these system requirements. The one big question mark hanging over it all is how long these system requirements will be applicable for. It’s all well and good at launch, but six months down the line when we’re all used to the wonder of our Pascal GPUs, will these requirements cut it for VR gaming? It’s one thing keeping up with upgrades so you can play all the latest games at 60fps, but it’s another matter entirely keeping up with the 2160 x 1200, 90Hz refresh rate of the Oculus Rift.
