Street Fighter V is an upcoming fighting video game being developed by Capcom. It is the fifth main numbered entry in Capcom's Street Fighter franchise. The game is set to be released in March 2016 for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows and will feature cross-platform play between the two platforms.
Street Fighter V continues with the side-scrolling fighting gameplay of its predecessors, in which two fighters use various attacks and special abilities to knock out their opponent. The game features the EX gauge introduced in Street Fighter III, which builds as the player lands attacks and can be used to either power up special moves or perform super combos known as Critical Arts, although the Focus Attacks from the previous game have been removed. New to this game is the "V-Gauge", which builds as the player receives attacks and adds three new techniques: V-Skills, V-Reversals, and V-Triggers. V-Skills are special attacks unique to each fighter. V-Reversals allow players to use a section of the V-Gauge to perform a counter move whilst being attacked.
Finally, V-Triggers use the entire V-Gauge to allow the player to perform a unique ability, such as a temporary damage boost for Ryu or added hits to Chun-Li's attacks. All the core mechanics of SF5 (V-Triggers, V-Skills, and V-Reversals, but more on those in a minute) come back to the V-Gauge, as you build or deplete it over the course of a fight. In the simplest terms, a player with a full V-Gauge has far more options than one without. Additionally, the game features a Stun Gauge which increases when receiving consecutive attacks and will cause the player to become stunned if filled, encouraging players to play defensively. The game also features interactive arenas, showcasing special animations when a player is defeated in a certain part of the arena.
The last ability related to the V-Gauge isn't as flashy as the other two, but it's arguably just as important. If you've played any of the Street Fighter Alpha games, you may remember the Alpha Counter, which lets you do a counterattack on the opponent while blocking. V-Reversals work almost exactly the same, letting you spend a bar of your V-Gauge to push back against an incoming onslaught and create some space.
Opportune use of the V-Reversal is crucial when you've got someone like Bison rushing you down, and you just need a moment to breathe and think about your next move. The input is a little tricky: while blocking an attack string, you need to tap toward the opponent and press all three punches. The distance it puts between you and your opponent also varies, so you'll have to get a feel for how they all work.
Street Fighter 5 retains the core principles of the series: one-on-one 2D fighting, with only a joystick and six attack buttons to work with. But as with any new fighting game, there's a lot you'll need to learn on the path to greatness. Online bouts against friends or high-level competitors will no longer be restricted by whichever platform you own, and both versions are being built to maintain 1080p/60fps parity in Unreal Engine 4. Instead of fracturing the audience into isolated spaces, everyone's invited to the same online party in SF5, which should greatly enhance matchmaking and the rate that new combos and tactics get shared around.
The Street Fighter cast is packed with fan favorites, and so far it seems like Capcom is leaning on nostalgia as the guiding force behind its character choices. The game will feature 16 characters at launch, four of whom are new to the Street Fighter series. Following the game's launch, several characters will be developed and added to the game via regular updates; these characters, among other post-launch content, will be able to be purchased via either of two in-game currency systems: "Zenny", purchased via real-world currency, or "Fight Money", earned through gameplay.[4]
