"...I am a bad joke."- Max Payne
He was born to Helen and Jack Payne, his father, who suffered from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), cheated on and sometimes beat his wife up, he
also wanted to toughen Max up and rarely showed any affection, Max had a tough childhood, you could say. His grandfather, however, was there in times of pain to tell him mythical stories. His mum died in 1976, after which Max turned on his father and once tormented him with a toy revolver. Jack Payne died 3 years after his wife died — 1979. Max therefore enrolled in the New York city police academy and graduated as the top trainee in his class. He met his wife, Michelle, whom he rescued from two robbers and got married to her six months later, their daughter was born on February 4, 1998.

In the beginning of Max Payne 1, he was portrayed as an happily married extrovert with a bright personality. Things however take a turn as his family was brutally murdered, upon the murder of his family, he loses the meaning of life and blindly works towards his remaining purpose : vengeance. The murder of his family in an home invasion was somehow connected with the investigation of a new drug dealer named Valkyr. He joined the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a secret agent and went undercover in the mafia. He was eventually framed for the murder of his partner, Alex Balder.
In 2003, he began to investigate a series of murder by a shadowy group of professional killers called the Cleaners. He reunited with Mona Sax, a murder suspect, to solve the mysteries of the inner circle, the investigation led to Mona's death. Following the events of Max Payne 2, Max got dismissed from the force and then became addicted to painkillers and alcohol. He left New York city for Sao Paulo in Brazil where he got a job working in a security detail for Rodrigo BrancoBranco, a wealthy businessman (whose wife later got kidnapped, triggering Max to go on a rampage).
His typical attire includes a black leather jacket, a white T-shirt and a pair of black trousers. He is an extreme introvert but he is noted for his soliloquy, his complex use of metaphors to describe his feelings about his actions and situation, also his love for painkillers. Max also bears a similarity to Neo of the matrix, having the ability to enter the bullet time. In max Payne 3, Max was heavily bearded and also showed signs of baldness in his hair.... He's getting old. But age doesn't stop this loud killer!! He is Max Payne!!!
